Location:
Sagareshwar wildlife Sanctuary is at trifurcation of three tehsils namely Khanapur, Walva and Palus tehsils of Sangli district. the total area of  Sanctuary is 10.87 sq.km..

Biodiversity:
This sanctuary is unique in a number of ways.  It is one of the very rare experiments and a significant endeavor in conservation in the sense that it is almost entirely a man made sanctuary, created through a planned afforestation programme, with an unreserved co-operation of the local population.

Sagareshwar is an artificially cultivated forest without a sufficient perennial supply off water and in which most of the wildlife species are artificially introduced in 1980. This protected area was previously declared as a forest park and a deer park was established within this on an area over 35 Ha.

Approximately 52 animals such as Cheetal, Sambar, Blackbuck, and Barking deer were confined to this deer park and set free in the Sanctuary area during August 1989.  This Protected Area is also unique because it is very easily accessible and in spite of its small size, it attracts a very large number of visitors. The status of the area is progressively upgraded.  It was first brought under the category of park.  It became Sagaroba game reserve in 1980 and thereafter, in 1985, it became Sagareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary.
Flora:

The forest type is Southern dry mixed deciduous and Southern thorn forest protection from grazing and forest fire has resulted in good regeneration of dry deciduous species. Hill slopes are covered with grassed. Protected Area was earlier managed under pasture working circle. Planted species were Tamarind, Neem, Kashid, Subabool, Gulmolhar, Anjan, Nilgiri, Australian acacia, Pangara, Chilar, sisoo, Agave, Khair, Karnaj, Shiras, Char, Bahava, Dhavada,etc.. Density of the forest crop is below 0.4.

Other attractions:
Sagareshwar sanctuary has a religious, cultural and archaeological significance also. The name is derived from an old famous Shiva temple and a place of pilgrimage since a very long time. The temple that lies right inside the sanctuary is not really one single temple but one large temple and a complex of 51 small temples, all from the Satvahana period.  There is one more temple called Kamal Bhairao or Kal Bhairao, located on edge along a steep cliff.  The entrance to that temple is through a narrow tunnel and the temple itself is partially hewn out of hard basalt rock.  Both these temples deserve serious attention of the archaeologist.
